From Evidence to Action: Europe’s Opportunity to Personalise Cancer Follow-Up Post Treatment
Europe has made major progress in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment and care. Yet follow-up after treatment often remains a critical gap in the cancer pathway. Across Europe, follow-up care can be uniform, uneven and insufficiently personalised. This means relapse may be detected late, with serious consequences for patients, families, and health systems1.
ctDNA-based Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) testing could fill this critical gap, by supporting a more personalised approach to cancer follow-up. In certain cancers and clinical contexts, these blood-based approaches can detect molecular signs of recurrence earlier than conventional imaging and help guide more confident shared decision-making about monitoring and treatment2.
The GUIDE.MRD Policy Awareness Brief sets out concrete opportunities for policymakers to support evidence generation, align regulatory and reimbursement pathways, and integrate personalised cancer follow-up into national and European cancer strategies. Building on this work, the EU-funded GUIDE.MRD project will host a high-level webinar bringing together policy, clinical, and patient perspectives to discuss what is needed to ensure ctDNA MRD testing reaches its potential, and is integrated into health systems in a structured, responsible and equitable way.
The webinar will feature:
- Nicola Bedlington (Founding Partner & Director, Millwater Partners GmbH), Webinar Chair
- Klaus Pantel (Chair, Institute of Tumour Biology, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf & GUIDE.MRD Coordinator), Panel Moderator
- Kristian Vigenin (Member of the European Parliament), Panelist
- Nicola Normanno (Scientific Director, Gemelli IRCCS & President, IQN Path), Panelist
- Iñaki Gutiérrez-Ibarluzea (Director Health Research, Innovation & Evaluation, Basque Government), Panelist
- Nicoline Ehrhardt (Board Member of zielGENau e.V. Patient Network Lung Cancer), Panelist
